Frequently Asked Questions

Can I travel to Ireland for work?
Yes, you may be allowed to come to Ireland for work if you are currently outside the country. Before traveling, you must check whether you need immigration permission from the Department of Justice or an employment permit from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. Visa-required nationals should also ensure they obtain the appropriate work visa before entering Ireland.

For non-EEA nationals, working in Ireland generally requires either a valid employment permit or specific immigration permission. First-time applicants for an employment permit must submit their application while residing outside Ireland. The system is managed by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE), and visa-required nationals must secure the permit before applying for a visa.

Certain categories of workers can obtain permission through special programmes. The Atypical Working Scheme, issued by the Department of Justice, allows specific workers to obtain immigration permission, while the Working Holiday Authorisation Programme lets young people from eligible countries fund an extended holiday through temporary work. Non-EEA nationals pursuing a position as a trainee accountant, or intending to work as a Minister of Religion, require preclearance approval before traveling to Ireland. Similarly, volunteering with an eligible organization also requires preclearance for all non-EEA nationals.

Entrepreneurs have the option to participate in the Start-up Entrepreneur Programme (STEP), which allows them to establish and work full-time in a business in Ireland, provided they do not seek employment elsewhere or become a financial burden on the state. The Immigrant Investor Programme (IIP) was open to non-EEA nationals willing to make a significant approved investment, with a minimum of €1 million or €0.5 million under certain conditions. Note that this programme officially closed on 15 February 2024.

Visawebs can help you understand which work route is suitable for your situation and guide you through the process to ensure all immigration and employment requirements are properly met.

If you are a non-EEA national legally employed in an EU Member State, you may be allowed to provide services temporarily to a company in Ireland on behalf of your employer without needing an Irish employment permit. This is permitted under the Van Der Elst process, which sets out specific conditions for such cross-border assignments. However, you must still comply with Irish immigration rules, and depending on your nationality, you may need to obtain a visa before traveling to Ireland.
If you are a scientific researcher, you may be allowed to come to Ireland to carry out a research project at an accredited research institution under the Scheme for Accreditation of Research Organisations (Hosting Agreement Scheme). This scheme allows researchers to stay for periods ranging from three months to five years and does not require a separate employment permit. However, you must first secure a Hosting Agreement with the accredited institution before applying for a visa (if you are from a visa-required country) or traveling to Ireland. Detailed information on the scheme, application procedures, and a list of accredited institutions is available through the official DETE Hosting Agreement Scheme resources.
If you are a visa-required national, you must apply for a visa before traveling to Ireland. You can check your eligibility and find out whether you need a visa through official guidance.
You can apply for all employment visa types up to three months before your intended travel date to Ireland. It is recommended to submit your visa application as soon as possible after receiving your employment permit, hosting agreement, or immigration permission to ensure your travel plans are not delayed.
