There are hundreds of ways to finance your studies in the US, despite the fact that it is one of the most expensive countries for higher education.
As an international student, you will not be eligible for funding designed for students in the United States. Since US universities prioritize internationalization, the number of international scholarships has increased. Some US universities accept international students regardless of their financial situation.
There are numerous funded scholarships from the US for international students which are both government and private. It gives some relief to the students who are aiming to study in America but due to high costs they are not able to.
Below is a selection of US scholarships for international students, some funded by the US government, some funded by private organizations and some funded by specific institutions. Good luck with your applications!
Government-funded US scholarships for international students
- Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program – This scholarship is a non-degree scholarship meant for international students, experienced working professionals, who want to pursue a program which is 10months of academic study in the US. Although the funding doesn’t support degree qualifications, students are able to study and develop their knowledge at academic institutions across the nation.
- Fulbright Foreign Student Program – among students this is the most popular government-funded scholarships meant for international students. This scholarship is meant for young individuals, graduates, and students who are into arts for the study in the US for one year. This is open for all types of fields except medicine.
Non-governmental US scholarships for international students
- Preply Scholarship – Three winners will receive an award of up to $2,000. Students between 16 and 35 (domestic and international, at any study level) may apply. The 500-word essay you submit should be about online education, multilingualism, and professional development.
- Surfshark Privacy and Security Scholarship – A $2,000 prize is available to a student currently enrolled in the US or another study destination as a high school, undergraduate or graduate student. You will need to submit an essay to apply and the scholarship is open to all nationalities.
- #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship – for this type of scholarship students are required to submit an essay or video that demonstrates your interest and initiative in promoting exchange programs and intercultural learning. This is for all types of subjects and students coming from all kinds of countries in the US.
- Civil Society Leadership Awards – this scholarship is for master’s level which is fully-funded and is available to students from eligible countries.
- David P. Shapiro Autism Scholarship – Available to students in the United States with autism who are currently enrolled in school.
- Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarship – Awarded twice a year to passionate international students wishing to study in the US. Worth US$1,000.
For female students:
- MIT-Zaragoza Women in Logistics and SCM Scholarship – US scholarships for female students of any age, ethnicity or nationality, to study at the Zaragoza Logistics Center at MIT.
- AAUW International Fellowships – Fellowships offered by the American Association of University Women for female international students to study in the US.
- Bat and Ball Game Women’s Sports Scholarship – A scholarship offering $1,000 to a woman currently studying a sports-related degree at any US university.
For graduate students:
- Rotary Peace Fellowships – Scholarships to study in the US awarded to master’s degree students studying within one of Rotary’s Peace Centers (such as at Duke University or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).
For students from developing countries:
- MasterCard Foundation Scholarships – Scholarships for African students to study in the US and Africa.
- Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme – Scholarships for postgraduate international students hailing from countries in Africa.
For Asian students:
- East-West Center Scholarships and Fellowships – Available to international students from the Asia-Pacific region to study at selected institutions in the United States.
- Japan-United States Friendship Commission – This commission operates as a partnership between Japan and the US. The commission offers grant programs to Japanese students who wish to study in the US (and vice versa).
- There are 11 scholarships for Asian students to study in the US at Wesleyan University in Connecticut through the Freeman Asian Scholarship Program at Wesleyan University. Scholarships cover the entire cost of tuition and fees.
University-specific US scholarships for international students
- Harvard University Scholarships – Harvard University offers several (very competitive) international scholarships to students all around the world.
- Illinois State University International Awards – International students can apply for tuition waivers, merit awards, and graduate assistantships at Illinois State University.
- Iowa State University International Merit Scholarships – Scholarships awarded on the basis of merit to international students.
- American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship – Awarded to international students with leadership potential who are interested in studying at American University in Washington DC.
- Brandeis University Wien International Scholarship Program – Scholarships for outstanding students looking to contribute to their communities.
- Clark University Global Scholars Program – For international first-year students, Clark University offers a scholarship of up to $10,000 and a taxable stipend of $2,500 for a paid internship.
- Need-based scholarships – Emory University offers funding options for international students. Students must demonstrate financial need.
- University of Iowa Scholarships for International First Year Students – Various scholarships for international students starting their first year in Autumn 2017.
- University of Minnesota International Scholarships – Offers a Global Excellence Scholarship, as well as the #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship, a renewable scholarship which offers $15,000 per year.
- Michigan State University International Scholarships – Various grants and scholarships for international students to study in the US at MSU.
- New York University Wagner International Scholarships – Financial aid for the Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
- University of Wisconsin Superior Non-resident Tuition Waiver Program – Tuition waiver for international students demonstrating financial need at the University of Wisconsin.
- University of Arkansas International Scholarships – Funding opportunities for international students of varying backgrounds and nationalities.
- University of Oregon International Scholarships – US scholarships to study at the University of Oregon, aimed at international students from around the world.
